Wii Outpaces its Predeccesors

So if I told you the Nintendo Wii has sold 5 million units in Japan really quickly, you wouldn’t be surprised, right? After all, the thing is selling as quickly as they can manufacture it. And I bet you wouldn’t be surprised either if I told you it managed to sell 5 million units quicker than either the Gamecube or the N64. It took only 60 weeks for the petite system to sell 5 million units in Japan — a time period in which the Cube moved about 1.7 million and the N64 moved 2.3 million.
Okay, how about this — would it surprise you to learn the Wii outpaced the Super Nintendo? Yes, the golden child of Nintendo, the SNES, which released in the era of pure Nintendo dominance and capitalized on the runaway success of of the NES, moved around 3.6 million. Sure, there are more people gaming these days, but that is still quite a feat. Way to go, Wii!
