Since the Wii’s release last year there’s been countless hacks and modifications made for the Wii remote, putting the device to uses far beyond video games. So here’s a rundown of the 10 coolest Wiimote mods we’ve come across so far, if we’ve missed off any you feel should have been added then let us know in the comments.

#1.  The Wii Power Glove

Ah yes, the Power Glove. You’ve probably already heard about this Wiimote mod, but we just couldnt leave it off the list. So here it is, the mother of all geek gaming accessories courtesy of a crazy Japanese gamer with a love for all things Wii and nerdy.

#2.  The Wii Remote BB Gun

untitled-1.jpg

While many Wii accessories to-date have been well, moulded lumps of white plastic bent and shaped to resemble tools of a sporting trade comes this hugely life-like mod..

Apparently fed up with the lameness of the Wii remote accessories, this Wii user constructed his own Wii ‘Gun’. No moulded plastic here folks, built around a BB Gun this mod brings a whole new dimension to Wii remote related injuries.

Aesthetics aside it seems a pretty sound mod technically too (although our understanding is hampered somewhat by not understanding Japanese), with the Wiimote ‘B’ button having been wired into the guns trigger for that ultra-realistic on screen cap-fest.

Verdict: We want one.

#3.  Control A Rival Console

Not content with using the Wiimote purely for Wii gaming activities, here’s an example of the device put to use on a rival console - ooh.

After branding the Nintendo Wii a ‘gimick’ Sony decided what better way to prove their point than to use the Wii remote a mouse-like pointing device during their conference demo. Sony used an ordinary PS3 running Linux with the Wiimote simply plugged into a spare USB port on the Pplaystation 3 system.

#4.  Wiimote Controlled LEGO Madness

LEGO and Wii. Plus robots. Here’s a selection of the coolest Wii remote robot LEGO creations we could find, i’m thinking the LEGO tank surveillance robot wins this round of madness though.

#5.  Wiimote Door Unlock System

Clearly the Wiimote’s uses can be adapted to more practical situations - a handy door unlocker for example. I cant help but feel that this needs a little more work though. The incorporation of a Zelda’esque “dee dii di dor dori” sound from the Wiimote would indeed confirm the awesomeness of this mod for all of time. It goes without saying that this Wimote enabled door unlocker is completely and utterly useless, yet awesome at the same time.

#6.  Firefighting Wiimote Robot

When i first heard about this mod i envisioned an awesome red wiimote with wheels, water canon and some form of mario style siren sounding action. Sadly it isn’t any of those things. But it’s still rather cool.

This Wiimote robot monster uses Infra-red to detect fire (a candle), on detection the Robot’s firefighting gear (a fan) kicks in and apparently cures the blaze. We’re not sure fanning a fire is the best way to go, but who cares we appreciate the potential - maybe.

#7.  Wiimote-Controlled USB Missile Launcher

What better way to make the most of a USB missile launcher than to control it’s actions via a Wii remote. This arms racing modder created a custom Wiimote script to control his USB missile launcher via Bluetooth, enabling him to declare war directly from his cubicle. Definitey looks like a lot of fun.

#8.  Wiimote + R/C Car = Real-Life Excite Truck

_remote_car_wiimote.jpg

Real-life Excite Truck - now who wouldn’t be interested in that? This German Wii fan has successfully created a custom script for the Wiimote, enabling it to control an R/C car.

The Wiimote is used to control the forward, reverse, left, and right controls of a remote controlled vehicle sans wires…Apparently, the Bluetooth module within the Wiimote conveys its signals to a laptop, which then passes the movements via a serial port to the actual remote, which in turn beams up the vehicle with instructions.

So once you’re bored with the onscreen fun and games you can take to the streets (or your garden) and thrash around an R/C to you hearts content.

#9.  Wiitar: The Wiimote Guitar

Here’s a custom script that turns two Wiimotes into a guitar. From what we’ve seen of this mod it does indeed look painfully difficult to operate and nigh on impossible to thrash out a quick tune at all, still we give it full marks for creativity.

#10.  Wiimote Car Acceleration Monitoring

wiimote_jetta.jpgApparently inspired by a perticularly riviting physics lecture this easily excitable Wii modder posed the question: Why not use the wiimote’s built in 3-axis accelerometers to measue g-forces, acceleration and even calculate my own 0-60mph times!

Why not indeed.

After some tinkering and much calculation Kevin managed to Successfully use a Wiimote to measure the acceleration of his car. He put together a script to dump the accelerometer output to a CSV file, then graphed it with Excel.

He notes that the accelerometer output isn’t that precise, but it’s good enough to give you feedback on your engine mods apparently.
