Pop Goes WiiWare

While it holds great potential, the idea of WiiWare still exists largely in the realm of speculation and myth. We know it is there, we know magical things will eventually be issuing forth from it — but right now, it just offers us the Everybody Votes Channel, a 5 dollar Opera browser (if you didn’t nab it when it was free), and the Metroid Prime Corruption preview. Clearly WiiWare functions as a vehicle for Nintendo to give us cool trinkets, but the real reason it has us all waiting with baited breath is the promise of small budget developers releasing inexpensive games for download. While Nintendo is still apparently targeting 2008 for major action, companies occasionally speak up to let us know their plans.
Today’s WiiWare plans come from a new company called — I’m not kidding — Nnooo (pronounced “No”). Nnooo’s goal is to make games “easy to play but deep enough to come back to,” which sounds like a fine product model to me. Their newly announced WiiWare title Pop will be their very first effort as a company. Essentially, the goal of Pop seems to be targeting a field of bubbles with the Wii Remote and popping them. If you’re good, you can make the bubbles bigger before popping them and thus earn more points. The game will also feature 4 player competitive action.
I can’t even begin to explain why to you, but this game sounds like an absolute delight to me. There are times when you want to spend hours immersing yourself in a complex video game environment, and there are times when you want to spend five minutes whacking penguins with a club to see how far they will fly. Or, you know, popping shiny bubbles with a motion sensitive remote.
