Nintendo To Charge for Online Gaming?

Posted on February 26th, 2008 by Mark in Wii Online

Wii Console PicSad day, Nintendo gamers, although one that we’ve probably all seen coming for awhile now. Nintendo, no doubt eyeing up the cash raked in every month by X-Box Live, has decided that it is probably high time they start taking away your money in exchange for online game play. Well, they call it “Wii Points,” but the rest of us call it money. However, Nintendo insists on pointing out that it’ll only charge for some online gaming — apparently they will indicate titles which will charge you by putting a red dot somewhere on the case.

Nintendo is currently being a bit vague on exactly how the charging will work. They call it “Pay and Play,” and make a point of drawing a distinction between that service and their usual Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection services. Early descriptions make it sound like a pumped up, extra fancy version of the current service. Whether or not basic services will be available for red dot games is unclear, with extra cost for extra services, but it is not beyond reason that Nintendo will expect you to shell out some sort of cost for any online access with some games. Monthly? Yearly? By the usage?  Don’t know yet, but stay tuned to Wii Centre for updates.

thats bull shit the only reason i got the wii is to play online for free but now u have to pay!!! i think thats why everyone bought a wii for free online if this happens it will just kill it cause this is not nintendo its some greedy guy who wants to out sell the 360.

  2. Ben Dover Says:

That is really unfair. Nintendo only pays for their online games not like Guitar Hero. Its not like they provide any thing you need to get online like the internet. This is completly unjust. Its not like they are brook they are making millions on the Wii and DS.

  3. Dann Says:

Yeh I might as well get a 360 if im going to have to pay for the good online stuff

Ok this sucks. My friends and I have Wii parties at our house and would like to hook up to each other. Now if Nintendo is going to charge us to Play online with each other I guess I will just have to continue hooking up two seperate T.V.’s and play that way. I think it just sucks that they are going to do this to people. I have to agree with Ben Dover when he states: “Its not like they provide any thing you need to get online like the internet.” That is just total crap. The only reason I got the Wii was to play online with my friends and family for free.

Wow, Nintendo has no right to do this, the only reason Microsoft requires money for their services is because their online capabilities are at least 10x stronger than Nintendo’s. Think about it, Nintendo’s online gaming is low rank; friend codes, no official account, NONE at all communication capabilities, and Nintendo is worried about privacy and safety for their children. And I do not see how they can match it considering the Wii is a very simple system.
