Nintendo Says DVD Functionality Still Coming
Posted on November 13th, 2007 by Mark in Wii Hardware
Hey, remember when the Gamecube was going to get a DVD attachment? Yeah, that sure turned out fantastic, didn’t it? No problems. And of course, we all know the Wii is the only system which didn’t launch with DVD playback functionality in the latest round of consoles — but Nintendo says the Wii will play DVDs — eventually. Believe it or not, the problem is apparently the popularity of the Wii. Yes, that blasted console is selling so fast, Nintendo is currently concentrating all of their resources on simply producing the console as is. Who has time to make updates when they are so busy printing money, right? This makes plenty of sense to me. I owned a DVD player long before I purchased the Wii, and I really don’t need my game system to play DVDs for me any more than I need my DVD player to play Wii games for me. It’d be a nice convenience, sure, but it isn’t anything close to a dealbreaker.
If you are wondering, Nintendo is now claiming the DVD functionality will be headed our way sometime in the beginning of 2008. A hardware change seems the most likely — Wii 2.0 or some such — but there continue to persist reports of a firmware upgrade. I guess we’ll find out … eventually.

well i honestly think nintendo will release information on a firmware update to enable dvd playback. my thought is this because….. the wii uses double or “duel layer” dvd. (that is which wii games are made on)
wii games are “duel layer dvd” disks…. so i know that it is very much possible for the wii to support dvd playback….
its just a matter of releasing this firmware update….
im sure nintendo know what there doing….
after all…. they listen to the public of “what gamers really want”…. nintendo takes every need into consideration….
its the dream of “revolutionalizing the future of gaming”
thank you for listening….
