Greenpeace Says Nintendo Hates the Environment

wiidscf7160.jpgWe all know the whole environmentally friendly issue is a popular debate these days (how big is your carbon footprint?) for many and varied reasons. I’m not here to get anywhere near that debate — this is a video game blog, and we embrace gamers of all viewpoints — beyond saying I like this earth and personally see nothing wrong with being nice to it. I am here, however, to tell you about all things Nintendo, and according to Greenpeace Nintendo hates the world and pours chemicals directly into rivers and onto small animals.

Here’s the deal. About a year and a half ago, Greenpeace started reviewing tech companies and assigning “rankings” on the ever popular 1 to 10 scale based on environmental friendliness. With a top desirable score of 10, Nintendo landed itself a whopping 0 — the very first null ranking handed out by Greenpeace to a tech company since the start of these tech company rankings. The rating is based on two very broad categories; the company’s efforts to eliminate hazardous materials in their manufacturing, and their willingness to take back and recycle their products once you’ve finished with them.

Nintendo does not feature a take-back and recycle program. They do have a FAQs area to outline what they do regarding the environment. You can check it out here. I’m not particularly fluent in what major corporations are supposed to do regarding the environment, so I can’t levy any personal judgments.
