Gamestop Going Wii Crazy?

For the last several years, anyone entering a video game store would have to pull out a magnifying glass to find the Nintendo console video game section. Okay, so maybe that is a bit of an overstatement, but you know what I mean. The GBA and the DS always represent, of course, but the section of wall space given to the 64 and the Cube was minuscule compared to the racks owned by Sony, and to a lesser extent, Microsoft. And for admittedly good reasons — the last few Nintendo systems have been more that a bit light in the game library department.

However, we might we witnessing a turning of the tables thanks to the insane success of the Wii. Everybody knows that the Wii is appealing to people who typically don’t buy video games, and you can sure bet that game stores want in on that action. We’re talking about a very large, previously untapped audience here. Gamepro is reporting that the Gamestop chain of stores is preparing to stock less games marketed only for “hardcore gamers,” to make more room for systems with a “broader consumer audience.” Which of course means the DS and the Wii. And while I’m all in favor of innovative new game styles and lots of shelf space for Nintendo, I’m also a long time game nerd, and I don’t want to loose traditional video games in a mass market rush for “non-traditional.” This kid thinks we can keep the best of both, thank you very much. I’ll have my Legends of Zelda and my Wii Fit.
