Bafta Loves Wii Sports

Obviously, the Wii’s launch package title Wii Sports is a tremendously popular and critically acclaimed video game. Sure, it is mostly a teaser/sampler of the Wii’s actual potential, but it sure is fantastic none the less. Everyone from toddlers to the nursing home community love to pick up a Wii remote and throw down on some bowling, right? Personally, I was most enamored of the baseball game — my wife spent a good hour or so one day creating Miis so our teams would be populated by user-created Miis instead of system generated Miis.
It turns out the Bafta awards love Wii Sports as well. The title took home lots of awards in fields like gameplay, innovation, strategy, and sports. Innovation and gameplay were probably pretty obvious choices, and it comes as no surprise to me that it picked up a prize for sports as well. Sports games are always in danger of dipping into repetitive gameplay. I think Madden released the same game for about five years there, and just changed the cover art to pretend like it was a new year. The only downer for the evening was losing out of the big prize, Game of the Year. Maybe next year, Big N. You do still have some nifty titles in your back pocket.
